Are too many children going into care?
Could better community support prevent this?
There has been concern expressed about the rising number of children coming into care and being caught up in the child protection system. There is evidence that in some local authorities are keeping their figures down by continuing to provide community support for vulnerable families. The costs of legal proceedings have to be taken into account when local authorities decide to cut back on early intervention and support as the savings they make may be lost in other areas. These concerns will be discussed by guest speakers including: Anthony Douglas, CEO Cafcass and Joanna Nicolas, Consultant Independent Social Worker and safeguarding adviser to both Cafcass, Professor Kate Morris, Head of Social Work Sheffield University Research/Evidence and Dr Freda Gardner, Consultant Clinical Psychologist, Clinical Director of Orchard House Family Assessment and Intervention Centre.
